Ashton-under-Lyne Sixth Form College is a provider of post-16 education in the borough of Tameside, Greater Manchester with an excellent reputation for academic success. The college has a long-term strategy for reducing its carbon footprint and is only the second educational establishment in the country to install a unique vertical axis wind turbine to produce renewable energy effectively.
Brief
In the interest of further supporting and enhancing the learning experience for its growing student population, the college undertook a project to build a new student centre that would improve students’ social space. Working closely with the projects architect and contractor, Steon Lighting were tasked with designing a sustainable lighting scheme for the new build.
Solution
Palaos LED panels, which are available in various shapes and sizes, were chosen for their excellent lumen output, operational efficiency and contemporary design. These were recessed in a ceiling grid system, wall mounted or suspended to provide general lighting throughout the corridors, reception, meeting rooms and open offices.
The energy efficient Royal Décor with floating glass was specified for the more decorative informal seating areas along with the LED Dinky Tilt adjustable downlights. Decorative Zeus low energy compact fluorescent metallic pendants, fitted with an anti-dazzle lens for added comfort, were installed in the entrance areas to create immediate impact upon entering the building.
Outcome
The new lighting scheme is energy efficient and has aesthetic impact; it has enhanced the vibrant and modern environment and given the overall scheme a strong sense of identity and quality throughout.
